You're an Orthodox, Roman Catholic, or Protestant
Christian who is seeking your true vocation: the place to
which God has called you. You need to know that your
coach will respect and understand your faith-based
journey. Success means more to you than achieving the
things of this world: being the best means living out
your faith in all areas of your life, and balancing the
areas of your life in a way that's congruent with your
beliefs and values.
I grew up Roman Catholic, lost my faith as a young man,
regained it many years later, and spent several years in
a mainline Protestant denomination (the United Church of
Christ) where I entered the seminary for a time before
finally ending up in the Antiochan Orthodox Church. I
understand doubt as well as faith, and can relate to
those who are Roman Catholic and Protestant as well as to
Orthodox Christians (and respect their beliefs). My
passion for working with career changers is grounded in
my Orthodox faith ... for my search for meaning in my
work is grounded in my belief that we are made to serve
God in all areas of our lives. I look forward to working
with you as you prayerfully discern God's plan for your
life!
The general approach to coaching (the process) is the
same, whether secular or faith-based ... what's different
are the values and their prioritization, and how your
values inform your goals. In addition, the notion of
"calling" is interpreted from the perspective of faith
rather than purely from a perspective of secular
personality theories and one's personal history. Certain
coaches incorporate elements of New Age beliefs into
their practices: the so-called Laws of Attraction are one
example of this. I do believe that one's attitudes affect
one's success, but I don't agree with those who claim
there's some mystical "power" in the universe itself that
one needs to align with to attract successful events
rather than failure.
Eventually (when I get time between all my other
projects) I hope to develop an Orthodox Christian vision
of coaching, grounded in the writings of the Church
Fathers. But for now, this remains a dream of mine. I
wish you all well in your faith journeys, wherever they
may lead you!
